Looks like I caused a big stir when I handed out two 4 year rookie contracts. Since 3 owners questioned this it is obvious our rule is unclear and may need an edit. But until then....
There was a rule placing limits on how many contracts of each length could be assigned to rookies. That rule only applied to the inaugural draft. Since then owners have been free to sign their rookies to whatever length contracts they like.
I conferred with the Co-Commish and he agrees with this interpretation, although he allowed that the rules could be read either way.
Since we are still in the rookie signing period there is no harm at all in ruling that owners may adjust their 2012 draft rookie contracts now. Contracts will only be considered final at the expiration of the rookie signing period.

Moving on, yes. Retroactively, it disturbs me that people may have limited themselves unnecessarily in the past but I don't see a fair way to correct that.

Indeed. Sucks that we thought we could only use 1 contract of each length in the past. I'm happy that it has been cleared up now.
