At today's press conference to announce their signings from the practice squad, newest Roughneck Bilal Powell was all smiles. To those who have followed him, it is no surprise considering how far he has come.
"This is the happiest day of my life," declared a beaming Powell. "I'm happier than a bird with a french fry."
Powell went on to describe his impoverished upbringing in Florida. "We were so poor, my basic diet growing up was swamp moss, grass and dog snot. Every Sunday my Mama would make her special dinner of clay stew. She will be so proud of me now. Knowing I have $1 a year guaranteed for the next two years changes everything for me and my family."
Strangely absent from the press conference was Roughnecks Coach Homer Jones, Jr. When we caught up with him in his office after the press conference he said, "if he turns out to be any good, I'm sure that [General Manager Marcus Dupree] will trade him away."
