Kyle Orton starting QB? by: Sal Coholic
Player contract negotiations have begun in the innaugeral season of the DFFL. All seems to be going smoothly in the league. But there is a blip in Washington. Joe Flacco.
After the collapse of the NFL the DFFL emerged in its place. One of the things that brought the NFL to it's knees was the wages of the players in a downturn economy. Because of this the DFFL has an automatic pay scale depending where each player was drafted. the length of the contract is negotable between the team and the individual player.
Because of contracts QB Kyle Orton may be the starter. Orton was drafted in the eleventh round and was assigned a $1 salary. When tendered a one year contract., he immediately signed it. "I don't know if I will be here next year if I am I will get an extension for more money. If I am not it will allow me to test the waters and earn a little more. Making the roster in the DFL is nto as easy as in the NFL That is the important first step. Next it will be workig my wayup the depth chart."
Staring is a real possibilit the Imperials have one elite WR corps. They also have two top running backs. Building the supporting parts around the QB caused them to wait on the quarter back position and a possible battle in training camp.
At $3 Matthew Stafford is projected as the signal caller of the future. It is doubtful he will be ready by the beginning of the season leaving the starting quarterback position betwee Orton and Joe Flacco. Look for Stafford to get a start late in the season if the Imperials lose alot early for seasoning. Reallisticly he will not see the field until 2010.
Joe Flacco has yet to sign his tendered contract of $1 for five years. Joe entered the preseason as the projected starter. That might not be the case now. "I have no intentions of signing a 5 year contract. I am worth much more than $1 a year it is insulting and I will not be locked into such a cheap rate. Washington needs to trade me to a team that will extend me and pay me what I am worth."
GM Chad Samuels had this to say about the holdout. "Joe will eventually sign his contract because if he dont he will not get paid. Kyle is a capable QB who was brought in here to compete and we hav no problems starting Kyle if we need to. We also brought in a couple of QBs we can develop on our practice squad. If Joebecomes troublesome we will promote one of them to the third QB status."
"If you want to play for the Washington Imperials you have to be committed to the team. This is a team sport. Joe needs to show us he is willing to put team first. If he does that I am sure the front office will pay him." commented Bill Cowher.
This leaves Kyle Orton competing with a rookie and a hold out. For now he is on top of the depth chart. If he performs well in camp, then he may remain there for good. Stranger things have happened in Wasington. Like Gus Frerotte beating out Heath Schuler as the starting QB in the 90's

Reality Check McDaniels not worried about Orton's struggles
Source: Frank Schwab - the Colorado Springs Gazette
Frank Schwab, from the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports Josh McDaniels tried to calm the masses that booed quarterback Kyle Orton during Thursday night's scrimmage at Invesco Field at Mile High, in which he threw a pair of interceptions and misfired on many other passes. "Kyle did fine," McDaniels said Friday, after reviewing the video. "There's a couple plays, obviously, we could have had back. But he made no more mistakes, certainly, than anybody else did."

Potential Imperials target no longer in plans
Sources told the Post-Dispatch that Avery has suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. Such injuries often require nothing more than time to heal. Even under the four- to six-week outlook, Avery would be sidelined the entire exhibition season at a minimum. If he's out six weeks, he could miss the first two regular season games (Seattle Sept. 13 and Washington Sept. 20). He was a fine sleeper candidate while he lasted

Imperials announce feel good story of hte season
Source: Jim Corbett - USAToday.com
Jim Corbett, from USAToday.com, reports St. Louis Rams rookie wideout/returner Mardy Gilyard keeps a snapshot in his wallet of the green 2002 Pontiac Grand Am that helped deliver him to the NFL. Talk about a hurt locker. Gilyard lived in one, spending long, cold nights in the borrowed car, sometimes sleeping in the driver's seat during a six-and-a-half-month stretch in 2006. That humbling reality check helped transform an immature former University of Cincinnati defensive back without a roof over his head into a hardworking, potential home run-hitting NFL playmaker. Gilyard had his scholarship revoked after his freshman season for academic reasons and worked four jobs to pay back the five-figure debt he owed the school. He could have dropped out and turned his back on his obligations. But Gilyard kicked hard and surfaced with a vengeance.
*"Now Mardy is in the DFFL and it is good to see a kid to pull himself up from being (at one point) homeless. If the Racoon City ZOmbies did not draft him we would have had to in order to make sure htis kid had a chanxce to rove himself on the biggest ff stage," Reported GM Chad Samuels "We wish him success in the DFL just not against us. We also want to see him torch the Tulsa Roughnecks when he plays them."

Imperials Complete Blockbuster in Division Trade The Washington IMperials in he closing hours of March 3rd completed a deal that sent all pro Larry Fitzgerald to the Tulsa Roughnecks, Fitz was a top 10 Wr in the DFFL in 2010 but that was not enough for him to retain his job in Washington. "Larry was a great guy and we wished we could have kept him but we really needed to add another RB after the Pierre Thomas fiasco last season. the way the draft was playin out everything pointed to trading for a RB. Our depth at WR was such we knew if we were to aquire a trade out piece would come from there. Larry ended up being the guy we traded." Laron Landry is also gone and Imperials management stated his injury status at the end of the 2010 season played in the decision to trade him as well. "I have always been a LaRon landry fan but when it is crunch time we need our started on the field producing LaRon did not do that and it is why he is no longer an Imperial." Samuels said. Offensive Coordinator was seen opening a bottle of champaign after the deal was announced to him "I love rookies and a chance to draft a top one excites me. I am sad to see Larry Fitzgerald go but having Blount come in to lock up our second running back spot will be integral for our push for a championship in 2011."
