The Tulsa Roughnecks purged their roster just three hours after the player resigning period, even buying out two players and releasing one from their practice squad long before free agency opens in June.
Tulsa locked up three free agents, including RB LeGarrette Blount to four year deal at $3. Blount has been the subject of numerous trade rumors recently. Also given new deals were RB Ryan Torain for one year at $2 and TE Owen Daniels for 2 years at $2.
Among the surprise cuts were TE Kellen Winslow, DL Ray Edwards and CB Charles Woodson. Also not offered new contracts were RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, WR Donald Driver, WR Randy Moss, K Connor Barth, LB Nick Barnett and S Pat Chung.
RB Danny Woodhead was released from the practice squad, while the Roughnecks bought out the remaining one year for both QB Kyle Orton and LB Justin Durant.
The Roughnecks front office they were still in negotiations with their one remaining free agent, WR Anthony Armstrong. Armstrong has hired Drew Rosenhaus and is rumored to be demanding a multi-year contract.
Reached at his villa in Baraquilla, Colombia, Roughnecks coach Homer Jones, Jr. spoke candidly about the moves.
"We just had too many players that can't [expletive] play fantasy football," said Jones between while refilling his tumbler of aguardiente, a local potent anise-flavored liquor.
"Now that Blount kid, he can play," continued Jones. "I am very high on Blount right now, if you know what I mean. That Torain kid, I just don't know. You'll have to ask [Roughnecks GM Marcus] Dupree about that one."
Jones then launched into a string of expletives about Dupree, including a very graphic and frankly disturbing story about what Dupree allegedly did with a fire extinguisher in a hotel room when the Roughnecks traveled to Raccoon City last season.
On the ongoing negotiations with Armstrong, Jones simply said, "That boy better not get too big for his raisin' or he might find himself cut."
Asked about the release of defensive starters Edwards, Woodson and Chung, Jones said, "We just can't have any uncertainty right now. We haven't heard from Ray since the season ended. I hear he's wrestling wild animals in Thailand or some [expletive]. And it just don't matter how good DBs are, you can always get new ones for cheap. Heck, they'll play for a buck if you just give them popcorn and let them watch the cheerleaders shower."
