I know I'll probably get hate mail even before finishing this column for what I am about to say. But someone has to ask the question no one in Tulsa dares to speak. Why does Roughnecks coach Homer Jones, Jr. still have a job?
Jones is so popular in Tulsa that people are even willing to overlook his recent brazen arson of General Manager's Marcus Dupree's home last month. To date, Dupree has refused to comment on the issue. The Roughnecks are even paying for Jones' attorney, former State Senator Gene Stipe, who himself just got out of prison for corruption in office.
Given the nature of the Oklahoma judicial system, Jones is almost assured of having all charges against him dismissed at his hearing on July 18th. This despite the fact that there were dozens of witnesses to both the crime and Jones' confession at the scene.
Maybe it's because Jones unexpectedly took the Roughnecks to the DFFL Super Bowl in his first season. After all, football fans in Oklahoma put winning above all else. Or maybe it's because of his legendary habit of tipping strippers with thousand dollar bills.
But nothing can explain the Svengali-like hold he has on Roughnecks management, including Dupree himself. Our reporter Charles Arthur Floyd once told me he was investigating a lead about blackmail material Jones held about Dupree. But then Floyd bought himself a car that no one on his salary could afford and shortly thereafter moved to France. We haven't heard from him since.
Sure, Jones' colorful rhetoric keeps guys like me in business. If we need a story for the sports pages, Jones is always ready with a blunt and humorous, if usually profane, quote.
But at some point Jones will do something so outrageous or dangerous that no one will be able to ignore his antics any longer.
